Electric car McMurtry Spéirling completed the Top Gear track faster than an F1 car (10 photos + 1 video)
The single-seater, 1,000-horsepower hypercar with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.5 seconds still impresses with its capabilities three years after its debut. This time, the tiny Spéirling has eclipsed all the records that have ever been set on the Top Gear test track.
Spéirling covered the 2.82-kilometer track at Dunsfold Airfield in 55.9 seconds, thereby beating the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which until now held the title of the fastest road car with a time of 1:09.6, by a full 13 seconds. It also beat the absolute champion, the Renault R24 with a 3-liter V10. The Formula 1 car built for the 2004 season lapped the track in 59 seconds.
The high-pitched whine of the car around the corners of the track makes it look like a radio-controlled car, so unreal are its dynamics. It is no surprise that the Spéirling driver must be in good physical condition, as the g-force levels easily reach 3G.
