Cat Cabinet – the territory of furry art (19 photos + 1 video)
In the heart of picturesque Amsterdam, among the canals and ancient buildings, there is a unique place that will not leave indifferent neither art lovers nor cat lovers. This is the Cat Cabinet (KattenKabinet) - the only museum in the world entirely dedicated to these graceful creatures.
The death of a pet can cause many reactions, but rarely does anyone manage to survive their grief and create a museum, as happened with the Dutch KattenKabinet.
History of the museum
The Cat Cabinet was founded in 1990 by Bob Meyer, a successful businessman and passionate cat lover. The idea of creating a museum arose after the death of his beloved cat Johnny Pierpont Morgan, named after the American entrepreneur.
Throughout his life, the cat received birthday presents from his owner's friends: paintings, a bronze statue of the cat, and even a recreated dollar bill with Morgan instead of Washington and the inscription "We don't trust any dog." After his pet's death, Bob decided to honor his pet's memory and share his love for cats with the world. He decided to turn his home in a 17th-century mansion into an unusual museum.
This is how the Cat Cabinet was created in 1990 - a place where art, history and cat themes merge. The building itself, where the museum is located, is an architectural monument and adds a special charm to this unusual space.
Meyer and his family still live on the upper floors of the old house, and the public halls of the museum present cats of all types and shades, depicted on a variety of media - from paintings and sculptures to posters and books. A bold collection like this might seem vulgar or tasteless to some. However, the KattenKabinet is decorated in the baroque style of old classical museums.
This stylish cat collection even collaborates with such venerable institutions as the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam to present works that have both artistic and feline significance. And like any real art collection, the KattenKabinet has published a catalog of its works called Cat-a-Logue.
What can you see at the museum?
The museum is a collection of works of art related to cats: paintings, sculptures, engravings, books and decorative objects. It contains works of both modern artists and classics such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Rembrandt.
Special attention is paid to exhibits that reflect the cultural significance of cats in human history. For example:
Antique images of the Egyptian goddess Bastet with the head of a cat.
Engravings and drawings demonstrating the role of cats in art from different eras.
Interactive installations dedicated to the daily life of these mysterious animals.
Living inhabitants of the museum
In addition to works of art, the museum is also home to real cats! They roam freely through the halls, creating an atmosphere of coziness and warmth. Visitors can watch them play and even chat with the furry creatures a little. This makes a visit to the Cat Cabinet not only a cultural, but also an emotionally pleasant experience. KattenKabinet is not just a museum, but a place where art meets love for cats.
