Users shared their opinions about cities that you don't want to visit (11 photos)

There are many beautiful places in the world. And terrible ones, too. And there are those that position themselves as excellent, but the reality is significantly different from the bright picture of advertising.

Users shared their experiences and discussed the worst cities they had visited. The results were partly predictable and partly unexpected.

1. Port-au-Prince, Haiti

- I was there right after the earthquake, working on the medical team. We were transported in a cage on a truck so we wouldn't get kidnapped. It seemed like heaven compared to what it's become now. It's such a tragedy... People have no hope for change or help from the outside.

- I was there a year after the earthquake, volunteering at the hospital, and it seemed like the earthquake had just happened yesterday. There were ruins and rubble everywhere, and the locals said that almost nothing had been repaired. We were warned never to leave the hospital grounds without an escort because of the high risk of robbery or kidnapping. If we needed to buy something on the street, we had to hand over the money to the armed guards at the gate, and they would go instead of us. That was 13 years ago, and it's probably even worse now. I was already scared then.

2. Jerusalem, Israel

- As strange as it may seem, for me this is Jerusalem. The city is dirty and unkempt. If you come here for spirituality, you will be disappointed. The holy places themselves are of course well maintained, but everything that is not on the main street is dirty and unpleasant.

However, it proved to me that peace in the Middle East is possible: I saw Jews and Arabs teaming up to rip off tourists.

3. Alexandria, Egypt

If you have ever smelled a filthy toilet in the heat of the day, that is the smell of Alexandria. Although, perhaps, Cairo is even worse

4. West Memphis, Arkansas, USA

This place is the worst for me. As soon as I got out of the car, I was attacked by swarms of mosquitoes. There were several police cars in the parking lot: a group of skinheads in a car attacked black people with baseball bats in another car. The owner of the gas station even added cheerfully: "I managed to shoot them (skinheads) from the window when they were leaving."

5. Delhi, India

- Crowded, dirty, smelly. People sell expensive souvenirs on the streets and won't take no for an answer.

- I've never seen such pollution anywhere. I've been to China, to Beijing several times, but Delhi is the record holder in this category. I had to go to the doctor and get steroids to cope with the terrible air and avoid allergies. Also, hellish problems with tourism, deception and dirt. I don't want to offend all of India - I liked the state of Rajasthan, despite the typical tourist scams, and Mumbai. In Mumbai I met warm-hearted people, it feels like a real working city, too busy to bother with deceiving tourists when you can earn money somewhere else.

6. Jakarta, Indonesia

Because of the terribly dirty air, my throat is constantly sore, traffic jams are terrible, slums and garbage. There is no such contrast of wealth and poverty in any city in the world. But the pros, in my opinion, outweigh the cons.

7. Cairo, Egypt

- I want to say the same as others: this is the most terrible place. I came alone, at 35, in 2009, and in 277 cities visited I have never encountered anything like this. 99% of people (men, women, children) will try to deceive you, and if something happens to you, no one will even blink an eye to help. Just hell, where dirt and lawlessness reign. It feels like you are walking naked through a prison toilet, which stretches for several kilometers.

8. Alice Springs, Australia

- A beautiful place with lots of attractions and decent people, but a huge problem with youth crime. When the hotel is surrounded by barbed wire, and everything closes after 10pm (even the pub), you realize that you have entered the twilight zone.

"Best" memory - how a car with teenagers almost hit us on a crosswalk, and a few hours later a guy in a bar described the same car with damage, saying that it was stolen by his nephew, who was already wanted for robberies. Three days later he came back, saying that the car was burnt, and there was no insurance, and asked for $ 50 for a new one. Politely refused.

9. Mumbai, India

- Right at the entrance to the airport there was a poster "If money is the root of evil, welcome to hell!" The second part of this phrase describes Mumbai perfectly. The stench of rotting garbage, sewage, cows blocking the roads, motorbike traffic jams, constant honking, beggars and toxic air. On the first day I couldn't stop thinking: "What am I doing here? How can I get out of here as quickly as possible?"

I was working on a thermal power plant project south of Mumbai, and the temporary office was in the Oberoi area. The first morning: breakfast in a restaurant, the staff opens the curtains, outside the window - a dozen naked or half-naked beggars, some hopping on one leg and washing their bodies. The apogee - the headline of the morning paper: "Plague Outbreak!" So Mumbai is my personal version of the worst city (Lagos in 1987 is a close competitor).

10. Naples, Italy

I was passing through in the summer of 2015, walked a couple of kilometers from the train station.

Dirt everywhere, everywhere, everywhere... It smells terrible. Stray dogs in packs were digging through garbage on every corner. Some guys were following me. The route to the water did not lead to the beach, but to an industrial port with the smell of sewage.

Everything was suspicious: shops with bars on the windows, people who stared after you. And the dogs... They were not afraid of people, they protected their piles of garbage, which were impossible to get around at every entrance and turn.

Naples is disgusting. Pompeii was nice though.
