The World is Changing... Pictures of the Past (39 photos)
Nobel laureate Martin Karplus
American Southwest, 1960s.
In the middle of the last century, future Nobel laureate Martin Karplus never parted with his camera and took thousands of film photographs, documenting the culture and life of people in rich Kodachrome colors: from the United States, Peru and Mexico to Austria and Japan. "When I went on those trips, I was determined to document what I saw, and I took a lot of photographs. They preserve images of a world that no longer exists. Economic development, global communications and wars have had their consequences: many towns and villages have been destroyed or changed beyond recognition, the everyday clothes of those times and a significant part of the social structure of communities have disappeared forever. Most of the people in my photographs belonged to the last generation, living in accordance with centuries-old traditions. The regions I visited in Europe and America lived according to their customs, many of which have been lost,” the photographer says.
