An investigation revealed that the beavers were the ones who derailed the train. The dam they had built gave way under the force of the water, washing away the tracks.
As a result of the accident, three locomotives and six cars derailed, and hundreds of gallons of fuel spilled, then the forest caught fire. The three injured railroad workers were hospitalized, given first aid, and then sent home.
A state investigation found that beavers were the ones who derailed the train. The dam they had built gave way under the force of the water. The torrent rushed through drainage channels to the railroad and washed away a section of the tracks.
The owner of the Canadian Pacific Kansas City railroad led a cleanup and repair crew after the accident. He said the three locomotives and six cars that derailed were carrying lumber and electrical wiring.
According to a letter sent by state officials to Canadian Pacific Kansas City, recovery work at the disaster site was completed in late 2024.
