The Dularcha railway tunnel and its inhabitants (11 photos + 1 video)
This abandoned train tunnel is now home to a micro-colony of bats and… a ghost train.
Tucked deep in Australia's Dularcha National Park is a creepy concrete tunnel that once carried trains. It now exists only to terrify tourists and serve as a home for a small but friendly colony of bats.
Built in 1891, the tall cement arch of the Dularcha Park Tunnel was installed to allow trains to pass through the scenic woods. For decades, passengers rode the tracks through the forested hills, using the tunnel to pass through otherwise impassable terrain. However, in 1932, the tracks were rerouted east, and its existence no longer made sense. The tracks were removed from the site, and it was largely abandoned as an oddity from the heyday of the railroads.
The tunnel was not completely forgotten, however. A tourist trail was built into and through the tunnel, allowing visitors to explore the concrete passage and begin to create local legends. Stories of ghost trains rushing through the empty tunnel began to appear with alarming regularity, attracting daredevils and thrill-seekers.
In fact, only a small colony of bats lives inside, which can be seen hiding in the cracks of a round cement tunnel. Anyone can see them. As for the ghost train, it all depends on luck and imagination.
