Two frightened men were found on top of a 65-meter cliff (4 photos)
Rescuers tried to get the victims off the ground using a helicopter, but the wind was too strong. The police boat was also unable to reach the scene due to bad weather.
The climbers were looking for a thrill and got stuck at a dizzying height. On Wednesday, February 12, two men were climbing to the top of the 65-meter Totem Pole rock, which is located on the Australian island of Tasmania and has attracted extreme sports enthusiasts from all over the world for decades. However, something went wrong along the way.
Rescue Operation
This horrific incident is reminiscent of the plot of the movie "Falling", in which two climbers climb a 610-meter-high dilapidated radio tower. During their mission, a rusty ladder breaks and they get trapped.
It is reported that on a small ledge just before the summit, strong winds tangled the climbers' ropes, making it impossible to descend. Rescuers tried to get the victims off the ground with a helicopter, but in vain because the wind was too strong. A police boat was also unable to reach the scene due to bad weather.
Eventually, the extreme sports enthusiasts were rescued by volunteers from a local mountaineering club. In complete darkness, the group began to climb and used ropes to pull the two adventurers off the cliff. According to police, the operation lasted until the early morning. No one was hurt.
Totem Pole
The Totem Pole is the dream of many adventurers. People first managed to climb to the top of the cliff in 1968. The location of the cliff makes the climb especially dangerous: since its base is in sea water, the rocks are very slippery.
In 1998, a terrible accident occurred there: a piece of rock the size of a television set broke off during a climb and hit the skull of British sport climber Paul Pritchard (58). Part of his body was paralyzed, and he also has memory problems.
