An act of "accidental vandalism" occurred in a museum in the Italian city of Brescia: a visitor tripped, fell and tore a 16th-century painting.
"The woman tripped and fell, putting her hand on the canvas. Fortunately, the visitor was not hurt. This can happen, especially since the exhibition is currently very popular," said Stefano Karadzhova, director of the city's Museum Foundation.
The incident took place in the Santa Giulia Museum. A painting by Moretto, dating from 1522-1524, was damaged, its canvas was torn. It is a double-sided banner (religious flag), on one side of which two saints are depicted, and on the other - the Virgin Mary accompanied by representatives of the radical religious movement of the Disciplinati.
The damage to the canvas was estimated at several thousand euros. However, the painting was insured and the visitor will not have to pay for it. The canvas was immediately sent for restoration, it can be restored, since the tear line did not damage the image.
