Britain's "first cat diplomat" received a new mission in Bermuda (3 photos)
The Foreign Office's former resident cat and mouser, Palmerston, is returning to diplomacy after several years away, this time in a new role in Bermuda as a "cat relations adviser".
Palmerston has been "brought out of retirement" to carry out diplomatic duties nearly 3,500 miles away from Britain. He will be based in the British Overseas Territory, where his main tasks are to "attend only those meetings he considers important, offer advice when necessary and indulge in a well-earned sleep". A big reason for his return was to hang out with Bermuda's new Governor Andrew Murdoch, who also happens to be a cat owner and was Palmerston's colleague at the Foreign Office.
Palmerston rose to prominence in 2016 when he was introduced as the UK's "first feline diplomat". During his time in office, he gained notoriety for his many public appearances and even clashes with his famous feline neighbour, Larry, a cat who works in Downing Street.
Palmerston retired in 2020 to spend more time outdoors. However, his return to diplomacy has now become a major event for many of his fans, particularly on the X platform, where he has more than 99,000 followers.
Palmerston, who became a star at the heart of British diplomacy, is now back on track for new diplomatic heights in Bermuda.
