Penguin Island (15 photos)
As it turns out, they live not only in ice
When we talk about penguins, we usually imagine them in the deserted white expanses of Antarctica. But these seabirds live in many different ecosystems throughout the southern hemisphere. A large population of penguins lives on Australia's green Macquarie Island.
This narrow strip of land, 32 kilometers long, lies one and a half thousand kilometers south of Australia and is known for its diverse ecosystem. Macquarie is home to many species of penguins, as well as seals and albatrosses.
In the early 20th century, the penguin population was on the verge of extinction when hunters hunted them for their valuable fat. But in the 1960s, conservation efforts were made. In 1978, the island was designated a nature reserve, and in 1997, Macquarie was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, helping to protect its unique ecosystem and vulnerable inhabitants.
