Why do they set fire to the rails in Chicago? It seems like it's just the work of vandals. But no! The rails are set on fire on purpose during freezing temperatures so that trains can run at very low temperatures. Gas heaters are located along the tracks near the switches, which are lit by workers to melt the snow and ice. And the sight of burning rails at night looks especially beautiful and atmospheric.
