A cafe with a view of North Korea has opened in South Korea (5 photos)
The newest Starbucks coffee shop in the country has opened on the observation tower on the border with North Korea. There are only 30 seats, but since the opening it has been sold out. Although you have to go 30 kilometers north of Seoul, to the Aegibong Peace eco-park in the city of Gimpo.
A strange form of entertainment, but apparently it is important to Koreans
Of course, not right on the border, but on the border with that very demilitarized zone, which is considered the most armed border in the world, by the way. Of course, since North and South Korea are still technically at war (no formal peace has been signed to end the war).
There are even more people than can fit inside
And how well do you see the northerners?
On a clear day, customers at the coffee shop can see the farms and low-rise buildings in Kaepung County just across the border. With good binoculars or a camera with a long zoom, you can even see people walking around.
A bit foggy, better visibility on clear days
Is this a provocation?
Yes, definitely. And a stupid provocation, like all provocations between the two Korean countries - those send them doramas on balloons, the North sends garbage and waste paper in response.
Recently, North Korea started turning on sound cannons to terrorize villages on the other side of the border. They probably saw that a cafe was being built, wanted to scare people away, but the people don't care.
You can see this village
On the other hand, this cafe helps relieve tension in South Korean society. They say, in a calm atmosphere, they drank coffee, looking at another country, and no fire, machine guns or war. There is tension and fear of war in society now, and this awareness that the border is safe really helps neurotics.
So the establishment does not suffer from a lack of visitors, although it has been open for literally a week.
