Geologists have discovered more than 1,000 tons of gold and ore veins in Pingjiang County, state media reported. The gold reserves are worth $83 billion.
More than 40 veins have been discovered at a depth of 2,000 meters in the Wangu mine. Analysis has shown that each ton of ore contains up to 138 grams of gold.
Hunan Provincial Geological Institute officials said the discovery is of great importance to ensuring the country's resource security.
According to the World Gold Council, China is the world's largest gold producer, accounting for about 10% of global production last year.
The South Deep mine in Gauteng, South Africa, was previously thought to have the world's largest gold reserve, with reserves of 930 tonnes.
