At the end of November, the RM Sotheby's auction house in Munich will put up for auction a racing Mercedes Type 122, built back in 1923. This is one of four sports cars prepared by Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft for the American Indianapolis 500 race, and among its subsequent owners is the former director of Formula 1 Bernie Ecclestone. They expect to get from 3.8 to 5 million euros for the rarity.





The auctioneers call the 1923 race the first time that factory Mercedes sports cars participated in the competition. The example put up for sale was originally built as a spare, but one of the racing cars was damaged during qualifying, and it was this sports car that was used to finish the race. It was driven by Max Sailer, the then chief engineer of the plant and the future head of Mercedes sports programs.

As a result, the crew took eighth place in the overall standings at the Indy 500, which was the best result not only for the brand itself, but also for European sports cars in general: Max Sailer and his nephew Karl managed to beat, for example, several rivals in Bugatti.
