A Chinese man who went through many hardships to reunite with his family has announced a tragic rift with them a year after they were reunited.

Yu Baobao, 37, took to social media to tell his 300,000-plus followers that he had stopped communicating with his birth family because of money.

Yu lived under the name Li Qiang for 34 years. He only found his birth family and learned his real name in September last year. He was kidnapped from his grandparents' home in southwestern Sichuan Province when he was two years old.

The child was ransomed by a wealthy family in central China's Henan Province. He says his adoptive parents mistreated him and beat him often. They told him he wasn't their biological son when he was five and sent him to another family when he was 11. He eventually left his foster home and became a vagabond. At 19, Baobao began working as a courier and went to Shanghai and Beijing to earn money.

According to Baobao, he spent every day searching for his birth family, and when the police finally told him that his DNA matched his biological mother's, he said all he wanted was to "get a good night's sleep on my mother's lap."

Many social media users were touched by Baobao's story, and he began receiving support during his live broadcasts.

After finally meeting his family, his divorced biological parents asked Baobao to help his two younger brothers, who were deeply in debt.

Yu took up online sales and, at the request of his parents, gave them about 60% of his earnings. As the publication notes, many people who have found a birth family after being kidnapped as children are engaged in online sales due to the virality of their story. Some companies, such as clothing manufacturer Langsha Group, even specifically seek out and hire such families to promote their brand.

Baobao's first commercial livestream was very successful and brought him an income of 470 thousand yuan (about $66 thousand). But he never received his full share, and his brothers spoke rudely to him, as if they were doing him a "favor" by accepting him into the family. One of his brothers even called him by his old name and threatened him with physical violence when they argued over money.

Yu said he was very disappointed when he saw how his mother treated her sons and when she asked for more money.

Baobao announced he was cutting off contact with his relatives in late September, but admitted he still missed his mother.
