BMW Skytop goes into production. All cars were sold before production began (19 photos)
The BMW concern made a purely symbolic statement about the start of serial production of the new Skytop sports car based on the spring concept of the same name. The planned production volumes and additional characteristics became known, but at the same time the company announced that the entire batch of cars had already been distributed to VIP clients.
BMW Skytop has become another development in a series of prototypes and small-scale cars that refer to iconic models of the past. In the case of Skytop, its appearance should remind, for example, of the famous open BMW with indexes 503 and Z8, although the design of the sports car includes some modern solutions, for example, very compact lighting equipment.
The special feature of the new product is its body type: BMW calls the Skytop a roadster, although in fact it is a targa. The car is equipped with a rigid roof panel, which must be removed manually. A special compartment in the trunk is provided for its storage.
The company does not specify which production model the Skytop is based on, although the BMW 8-series can be recognized in the body contours and interior architecture. The power unit used also indirectly hints at the platform. The Skytop will be equipped with a 4.4-liter V8, developing 625 horsepower and working together with an 8-speed gearbox and all-wheel drive system. The new product will reach 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds.
It is noted that the decision to create a limited edition of serial BMW sports cars was prompted by an exclusively positive reaction to the concept and a large number of requests for purchase.
BMW will assemble 50 such cars in total. The cost of the Skytop has not been disclosed, but the price range can be judged by the previous similar experience of the Bavarians. In 2022, the company released a similarly sized batch of extreme 3.0 CSL coupes on the 4-series platform, and they were rumored to be sold for at least 800 thousand euros.
