Lions in the snow and beer in the snowdrifts - Africa is covered by record snowfalls. The height of the snowdrifts is approaching 2 meters, and locals are doing what they can: making snowmen, trying to ski and sawing photos and video content. Because soon everything will melt... Ahh, crocodiles-hippos...

In South Africa, almost 2 meters of snow fell, the snowfall lasted about 10 hours. In some areas, power plants and water pipes failed. Traffic on the highways was paralyzed, people were trapped in their cars. More precipitation is expected in the near future.

The highway from Johannesburg to Durban is paralyzed, the media reports. More than a thousand cars and hundreds of people are stuck in traffic jams. There are already victims: a local woman died after freezing to death in a stuck bus.

A resident of the Republic of South Africa, Maria, told Gazeta.Ru that due to a sudden snowfall, her friends were stuck on the highway from Johannesburg to Durban for more than a day:

They were stuck, they were covered in snow. They spent the night in the car. They left in flip-flops, they were freezing. They had no food, only porridge for the baby. On Saturday, I hoped that they had already passed safely or had been evacuated. It turned out that they had not. They ran out of gas, their phones were dead, there was no contact with them. Today they returned home in their car. Of course, they were completely shocked by what they had experienced. People were blocked from Friday until the very, very evening of Saturday,” she said.

But people are people! Those Africans who were lucky enough not to get stuck in a traffic jam are posting photos and videos on social networks. Because “when else will such a chance come up?”

I must say that snow in South Africa is an unprecedented event for these places. According to the calendar, it is spring there now.

Snowfalls in South Africa are related to its proximity to the polar and Arctic seas, as well as to Antarctica itself, the head of the METEO forecasting center Alexander Shuvalov told NEWS.ru.

The phrase “snow fell in Africa” is simply a little surprising. On the other hand, we are talking about South Africa, and South Africa is, after all, that part of the African continent that is close to the polar seas, the Antarctic seas and Antarctica itself, the forecaster said.

Lions, it seems, are also in shock from what is happening:

Fortunately, the storm is dying down and the warmth is gradually returning. It is currently around +16 in Pretoria, but by Monday the air in the capital and other parts of the country should warm up to +21.
