Passengers locked a crying child in an airplane toilet “for educational purposes” (5 photos + 1 video)
A one-year-old girl traveling on a plane with her grandparents cried non-stop, irritating passengers. Two women, at the request of the grandmother, took the child and locked her in the toilet to calm her down and "re-educate" her. The video of the incident caused a wide resonance on the Internet.
This happened on August 24 on a Juneyao Airlines flight from Guiyang to Shanghai. The little girl, traveling with her grandparents, did not stop crying throughout the flight, which greatly irritated other passengers.
According to reports, some passengers even put handkerchiefs in their ears to muffle the child's loud cries. The girl's grandparents were apparently unable to calm her down. So the grandmother, by her own account, allowed two unknown women to step in and help her.
One of the women, Gou Tingting, later posted a video on Chinese social media of herself carrying the crying girl to the plane's toilet. In the comments to the video, Gou wrote that she "just wanted to raise the child and give everyone a rest."
Once in the toilet stall, the girl continued to cry and call out for her grandmother. But she eventually stopped when the women told her that she could only leave the toilet if she kept quiet for three minutes.
When the plane landed in Shanghai, police were called in. However, they reportedly only lectured the girl's grandmother about her role in the incident, and took no action against the two women who locked the child in the toilet.
Chinese media reports that the girl is about a year old. Police said they believed the grandmother, who was taking the girl to Shanghai to be with her father, was grateful to Gou and the other woman for intervening because the toddler would not calm down.
Video of the incident has sparked widespread discussion online about how children should be treated in public places, with many users strongly condemning the women for locking the child in the plane's toilet.
In a statement, Juneyao Airlines customer service said they were aware of the incident and were conducting an internal investigation. The airline acknowledged that a flight attendant cannot be in the cabin at all times and that there may be a situation where someone decides to act on their own.
The police confirmed that they learned of the incident from online comments and are currently handing the case over to the relevant departments for further investigation.
