American escaped unharmed from the mouth of a whale (4 photos)
Lobsterman Michael Packard has opened up about the terrifying moment his entire world went dark. The Provincetown, Massachusetts, resident said it felt like he was hit by a "freight train" in 2021.
"It was a normal day, I went out to sea at dawn. On my third dive, I hit the bottom and felt a big hit. It was like a freight train... and then everything went black," the 58-year-old diver said.
"There was water all around, I felt pressure on my whole body. And I was just moving through the water at a tremendous speed."
Michael initially thought he had become a victim of a great white shark. And he was 100% sure that he would die. In his mind, the man said goodbye to his wife and children.
In desperation, Michael began kicking the whale. The creature began thrashing around until it finally surfaced.
"I saw a light, and the next thing I knew I was out there."
Dive assistant Josiah Mayo saw the whale surface and throw Michael back into the sea. He estimates he was held captive for about 30-40 seconds.
When humpback whales open their mouths to feed, they may not notice a human. That's what happened to Packard.
The diver suffered no broken bones, but he had "a lot of soft tissue damage." He was back at work within three weeks.
