A rare specimen in the water

Chirodectes maculatus is truly one of the rarest jellyfish in the world, with only two confirmed sightings. The first sighting occurred on May 2, 1997, off the coast of northeast Queensland, Australia, near the Great Barrier Reef. This specimen was found approximately 43 kilometres (27 miles) offshore and within 5 metres (16 feet) of the surface.
