15. Rusting Steam Train in Lebanon



Ghost train stations in Lebanon have been frozen in time since rail service ceased in the 1990s. Rusting steam locomotives lurk in war-torn repair yards. Others languish on weed-choked tracks nearby. As automobile ownership increased in the 1960s, Lebanon's trains began to decline in popularity. The Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990) dealt the final blow to the rail lines. The fighting left depots and tracks damaged. In addition, many stations were converted into military bases. By 1978, virtually all rail service had ceased. By 1990, the last train had departed.
