A unique breed of giant dogs that lived in the times of Rome and Ancient Greece has been revived in America (4 photos)
One of the most legendary dog breeds, apparently, was revived in the USA by dog breeder Marcus Curtis. This is a molosser, known since ancient times and considered extinct until recent times.
Molosser is a breed of dog of gigantic height and weight (up to 150 kg), which, according to legend, was bred by the mother of Alexander the Great - Olympia. Dogs of this breed were used as home guards by both the ancient Greeks and Romans. In appearance, they resembled an enlarged version of a cross between a mastiff and a rottweiler, with a height of up to one meter at the withers. This is exactly the kind of animal that the breeder Curtis managed to breed.
Sasquatch and his faithful friend.
Marcus named his creation Sasquatch and now, at only one and a half years old, he weighs 96 kilograms. The pet feels great and constantly demands food, which is not surprising given his weight. Some people think that this is just an overgrown mastiff, but upon closer examination, he has the characteristic features of a German Rottweiler. Considering that such dogs can live up to 20 years (on average - 12), Sasquatch can gain weight up to half a ton. A joke, of course, but the beast is actually very big!
It is believed that dogs are the closest relatives of wolves and jackals, which also belong to the genus of canines. About 15,000 years ago, one of the branches of this genus joined people. At the initial stage, it was an equal cooperation. People allowed dogs to be nearby and warn of approaching danger. In return, they received leftovers from food, although dogs are excellent hunters and get food on their own. But coexistence was beneficial to both our ancestors and their toothy pets.
"And I'm higher, master!"
Gradually, as a result of centuries of selection, there was a division of breeds into decorative and guard or watchdog. You probably see decorative ones every day, accompanied by lonely grandmothers or outrageous beauties. At the moment, we are not interested in them, we are talking about large representatives of canine breeds. Of these, the most interesting are mastiffs, rottweilers, St. Bernards, alabai and Newfoundlands. They can be considered the descendants of the legendary molossers.
Surprisingly, the larger the dog, the calmer and friendlier it is. The exception is probably the Great Dane - one of the most stupid and unpredictable dog breeds in terms of behavior. The rest are considered to be very melancholic and do not pose a particular danger to humans (except for Rottweilers, of course). They do not have any pronounced enemies, except for wolves, who do not like dogs at all, but are afraid to attack large representatives of this family.
Also in the American state of Utah lives the largest dog in the world named Euphrates.
If American breeders really managed to recreate molossers, this is a truly important achievement. It is only necessary to take into account that keeping a huge animal weighing over 100 kilograms is very problematic. And this concerns not only feeding, which requires significant financial costs. The fact is that large pets do not notice the furniture around them, do not understand its purpose and simply destroy it even by simply touching it. In other respects, these are quite nice dogs.
