40 days without food: an American woman was found chained to a tree in the jungle (6 photos + 1 video)
50-year-old US citizen Lalita Kayi Kumar spent 40 days without food in the jungles of India. The woman was chained to a tree, she was found by a shepherd. 
Lalita was urgently hospitalized, she is currently unable to speak due to the ordeal, but wrote in her letter: "My husband chained me to a tree in the forest." 
The woman had been living in India for the past 10 years with her husband, identified in the India Today report as Satish. He is the prime suspect.
Several people have already been questioned in connection with the case, with the investigation extending beyond the Sindhudburg area where Kumar was found. 
The American woman was found near Sonurli village, about 450 km from Mumbai, on July 27. Her right leg was swollen from being chained. She was severely dehydrated, unable to speak and apparently had not eaten for days. Police officers who arrived at the scene broke the chain and freed the woman.
A case of attempted murder has been registered against Kumar's husband. The victim claims that he abandoned her in the forest after a domestic dispute.
"Lalita is out of danger," a police spokesman said. "The doctors treating her said she was suffering from mental health issues. We found prescriptions for medications on her."
Kumar, who was born in the US, had lived in Goa, a neighbouring state to where she was found. Police also found a photocopy of her US passport and national identity card. Her visa had reportedly expired.
