A poisonous spider killed a tourist relaxing in a restaurant (4 photos)
On July 9, a tourist named Vinicius and his friends went to have dinner at one of the coastal restaurants in Cairo, Bahia, Brazil. As the man settled down on a wicker sofa, a friend warned him that such furniture was a favorite nesting place for the deadly spider.
The friend pointed to the cocoon on the wicker sofa, but Vinicius sat down anyway. The next day, the tourist became seriously ill, having chest pain and difficulty breathing. The man was taken to the hospital, but by that time the bite site had turned black.
Hospital images show how the spider's powerful neurotoxin began to spread throughout the body. Local media reported that the victim fought for life for five days, but died on July 14.
The restaurant owner commented: “This has never happened in 20 years of our work, not a single client complained, no one looked for us or asked for help.”
Officers are checking CCTV footage to find out how and when Vinicius was bitten. The species of arachnid is also unknown, but two Brazilian spiders - the brown widow and the wandering spider - are among the deadliest in the world.
