It took police in Oregon three months to get on the trail of an extremely dangerous criminal group specializing in the purchase of collectible sets.
During this time, enterprising thieves managed to sell as many as 4,153 sets worth $200,000 to buyers.
The investigation revealed that the owner of the Brick Builders store, Ammon Henrikson, 47, of Springfield, knowingly purchased new and unopened Lego sets that were stolen from local retail stores, police said.
Police said the suspects sold the kits for a modest fee and used the proceeds to buy drugs.
The investigation revealed that Brick Builders employees knew the kits were stolen.
The department also worked with loss prevention investigators from retailers such as Target, Fred Meyer, Barnes & Noble and Walmart to confirm that Henrikson purchased Lego sets that were stolen from those retailers.
“We are all feeling the impact of organized retail theft through the rising costs of the goods we buy for our families,” Springfield Police Department Police Chief Andrew Shearer said in a statement. “Recognizing this, SPD's Crime Reduction Unit, with the support of our retail partners, works diligently to hold accountable those who choose to engage in or support retail theft. SPD is proud of the work of our officers and we are committed to pursuing those behind these crimes in our community.”
Henrikson and another suspect, 57-year-old Eugene resident Albert Nash, are charged with organized retail theft and theft by receiving.
Well, those who actually stole were not detained. Now they will have to look for a new buyer.
