“We became friends without realizing that we were sisters. But we both felt that we had something in common,” said Helen.

The publication notes that there are sad circumstances behind the story of Anna and Helen. For a long time, the trade in babies flourished in Georgia - they were sold illegally. Journalists found that illegal adoptions had been going on for more than 50 years, organized by a network of maternity hospitals, kindergartens and adoption agencies that conspired to take children away from their parents, falsify birth records and place them with new families in exchange for money.

“Mothers were told that their children died shortly after birth and that they would be buried in the hospital cemetery,” says journalist Tamuna Museridze, who exposed the system.

According to her, the number of cases of child abductions in Georgia reaches 120 thousand. Successive Georgian governments have repeatedly attempted to investigate the scheme, with only a handful of arrests made in the past 20 years.
