Kevin Costner admitted that he was Whitney Houston's invisible bodyguard (4 photos)
Kevin Costner was interviewed by hosts Dax Shepard and Monica Padman on the Armchair Expert podcast, where he discussed his work with Whitney Houston on the 1992 film Bodyguard. The actor himself chose the leading lady and kept his promise to her.
Shepard asked how Costner and Houston's relationship was on the set. Kevin explained that he chose her for the role: "I loved her. It's not a secret at all. I knew it had to be her."
Looking back, he realizes that he should have taken the director's chair. Costner wanted screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan to direct the film, but Mick Jackson, who "wasn't comfortable with Whitney," directed the film instead.
“As a producer, I insisted on Whitney,” he said, noting that he did not allow the director to cast another actress.
When Costner saw that Jackson was literally afraid of Whitney, he intervened.
"I started directing her. I wasn't trying to usurp the director, but I made a promise to her that she would be good in this film.
The actor added: "In the song she promised to always love me, but I had to keep my promise."
Costner immediately warned the singer that she would not have an entourage on the set, just like he did. Only her assistant, Robin Crawford, was with her.
Shepard commented that he must have "made her feel completely safe."
Costner admitted: “At one point I realized how serious our relationship seemed to many, and I accepted it. I was her invisible bodyguard.”
“This is so sweet. I think something real happened between you, and the audience felt your connection. You were her bodyguard - there is no doubt about that,” the presenter concluded.
