The first flight of an airline specializing in transporting pet dogs with increased comfort took place in the United States.
Bark Air, the world's first airline to prioritize the comfort of dogs over people, took its first flight on Thursday, the carrier said in a press release. The historical event took place on May 23. The Gulfstream G5 plane took off from Westchester Airport in the suburbs of New York and successfully landed at Los Angeles' Van Nuys Airport.
Earlier in April, the American company Bark (“Woof”), previously known as a manufacturer of various products, services and content for dogs, announced the creation of its own dog airline. Many considered the news a joke.
But everything turned out to be serious. Bark has partnered with an Argus Platinum rated charter airline, which is responsible for all aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance.
Bark Air, which boasts that it's the first in the world to offer flights designed specifically for canines and their companions, treated dog owners to a pre-flight lunch prepared by chefs in New York, while the main furry passengers socialized with each other.
Before boarding, the dogs were provided with soothing jackets and a variety of toys to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable flight, while concierges helped them settle in on board through socialization and preparation of the interior to suit the dogs' interests.
On the plane, during the climb and descent, the dogs were served a drink of their choice to prevent them from experiencing ear discomfort caused by changes in cabin pressure.
The first flight, which quickly sold out, cost a dog traveling with one person $6,000. The next flight is on Thursday 30 May and there are only a few seats left.
Bark Air's first international flight is also scheduled for May 30, from New York to London, and is already sold out. Its cost is $8000. The first flight to Paris, costing $8,500, will take off in October, and you can still catch it.
Bark co-founder and CEO Matt Meeker admitted that the price was quite high:
“For most families it is, of course, expensive, but still cheaper than most alternatives today. And this is how most innovative products and services began,” he wrote.
“TVs, telephones, VCRs and DVDs, cars, travel by train and ship, and air travel all started at very high prices until demand was proven and costs could be reduced by introducing new products to the masses,” the director added. Bark.
