Portable sundials were a popular instrument in the nineteenth century. They were relatively inexpensive and accurate, and could be easily carried.

These clocks were usually made of brass or wood and had a dial with an hour scale and a gnomon that pointed to the sun.

To determine the time, the user oriented the watch towards the sun and read the time by the shadow cast by the gnomon on the dial.
