The defendant in one of the most scandalous criminal cases in American history was 76 years old.
O. J. Simpson, a star of American football, comedy films and a cold-blooded killer who managed to escape punishment, died at the age of 77 in Las Vegas.
"On April 10, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, passed away after battling cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren," Simpson's family said.
It is noted that in February of this year, journalists reported that the former athlete was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had been in a hospice for several months. However, Simpson in his video messages denied being in a hospice, but did not comment on journalists’ information about his illness.
In 1985, O. J. Simpson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He became the first player in the National Football League to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. In addition, he played in several dozen films. His most famous role is Detective Northberg in the comedy trilogy The Naked Gun.
However, it was not sports or his career as a film actor that made him world famous, but a high-profile lawsuit. In 1994, he was accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown-Simpson and her lover Ronald Goldman. The famous police chase after Simpson was broadcast on all US television channels.
Simpson was apprehended only after a three-hour chase.
The trial of Simpson caused a wide public outcry; all of America was sure that it was he who committed the double murder. It is believed that his lawyers chose a cunning defense strategy using racial prejudice. And thanks to these manipulations, they managed to convince the jury of the defendant’s innocence.
Nevertheless, civil proceedings followed the criminal proceedings. There he was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of $33.5 million.
Simpson was finally jailed in 2008. But for a completely different matter. The court found him guilty of robbery and kidnapping. According to the case file, on September 3, 2007, Simpson and a friend broke into a hotel room in Las Vegas where a sports trophy dealer was staying. Threatening him with guns, the robbers forcibly took away the cups that had previously belonged to Simpson.
The court then sentenced Simpson to 33 years in prison, but he again managed to get out and served only 9 years; he was released on parole.
