If some acquaintance says that he is being haunted by evil ghosts who want to kill him, then all we can do is twist his head or, in extreme cases, offer help in finding a doctor of the appropriate profile.
But with the heroine of this story, which happened almost a century ago, not everything is so simple and unambiguous. The mystical case of the death of Netta Fornario on the island of Iona in Scotland has never been solved. Although the circumstances of her death are unconfirmed and cannot be verified due to lack of data, it is nonetheless a very interesting story.
Iona Island
In the late summer of 1929, a woman about 30 years old - the same Netta Fornario - set out from London for a small Scottish island known for its folklore and rich history. She was not an ordinary woman for that time. Netta was part of the Alpha and Omega Society, a splinter organization from the famous magical order, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. And, presumably, Netta had a strong interest in fairies.
It is unclear why she went on this trip. However, the woman packed a considerable amount of luggage, clearly intending to stay on the island for a long time.
Netta and Mrs McRae
Netta Fornario
Once on the island, Netta Fornario settled with a local woman, Mrs. McRae, who took in guests. These ladies were a strange couple - a modest provincial woman and a metropolitan occult practitioner. But a kind of friendship, albeit strange, arose between them.
Netta spent most of the day alone, walking around a tiny piece of land, and devoted her nights to supernatural practices.
For long days everything went without problems. But as the sunny summer days gave way to autumn coolness, something changed.
The first sign that something was wrong was a cryptic message Netta sent to her London housekeeper. It said she wouldn't be in touch for now because she needed to work on a "terrible healing case."
Strange Behaviors and Signs

Netta's apparent frustration grew until the morning of November 17, when McRae arose to find Netta frantically packing. The guest informed the hostess that she needed to leave for London immediately because several people were attacking her telepathically. McRae just didn't twirl her finger at her temple. She did not find anything strange in Netta’s appearance until she noticed that her silver jewelry had literally turned black overnight.
McRae told Netta that it would be impossible to leave that day - the boat to the mainland simply did not go on Sundays. Netta got angry and went to her room. A few hours later she returned and calmly announced to the hostess that she would remain on the island for now. Then she went on one of her usual daily walks.

McRae is used to Netta going out alone and taking long walks. Therefore, I was not immediately alarmed when the young woman did not return during the day. However, with the onset of darkness, the hostess raised the alarm. The night was too cold and windy for anyone to roam the island.
Even though Iona is a small island, it took two days to find Netta's body. The place of death was, to put it mildly, unusual. In the turf, with a dagger that was discovered nearby, a cross was carefully cut out, on which Netta’s body lay. The poor girl was wearing only a thin black cloak.
Examination without answers
The doctor who examined the body was unable to accurately determine the date and time of death. He therefore stated that the woman could have died at any time between November 17th and November 19th. The doctor was also unable to determine the cause of death. So he went through all the options and settled on exposure to the elements and a heart attack. Neither explained the strange, fresh, deep scratches on Netta's body and feet. Maybe she was running away from something?
This may indeed be the case when a young woman, unaware of the deadly effects of strong winds and low temperatures, became lost and confused on a dark night on a remote Scottish island with a rather harsh environment.
Netta Fornario's grave in Iona
However, her colleagues in the magical arts were convinced that Netta Fornario had died as a result of a telepathic attack launched by someone many kilometers away.
