Even the most cruel and heartless criminal will not be able to resist such strong evidence as his own victim, who returned for the sake of exposure from the other side.
When it comes to murder mysteries, the questions usually asked are who did it and how. But not in the case of Teresita Basa. Miss Basa's killer is known and the manner in which she was killed has not been a mystery since the body was discovered. The mystery is how the case was solved. More precisely, whether the case was solved as the media and interested parties assume.
Murder of Teresita Basa
Teresita Basa
Teresita Basa worked as a physician at a hospital in Chicago, Illinois. She came to the United States from the Philippines, where she was born in 1929. The lonely, quiet woman had no enemies or ill-wishers. The doctor's body was found in the apartment on February 21, 1979. Someone reported a fire in the apartment, and firefighters found more than just flames.
Teresita Basa was stabbed in the chest. Emergency personnel discovered that the knife with which she was killed was still sticking out of her chest. Her body was covered with a mattress. The killer set fire to the mattress and left the premises. It was not immediately clear that he had stolen the jewelry. It later turns out that Bas's killer was a repeat offender. The condition of the body suggested possible sexual assault. But none of the available sources confirmed or denied this.
The apartment of the deceased after the fire
Initially, there was no one to blame for the heinous crime. Police were unable to recover any of the stolen jewelry. They were unable to link any of the suspects to the crime. It seemed like it was just a dead end, but not for the colleague of the deceased, Remy Chua. Chua worked with her at the hospital and recalled once mentioning that she would not mind if the spirit of a colleague visited her to tell her about what had happened. Later that day, a series of frightening visions and nightmares began.
Teresita Basa - a guest from the other world
Remy Chua said that after the death of a colleague, she began to see her in the locker room at work. According to Colin Wilson, author of Poltergeist, a Classic Study of Destructive Ghosts, Chua began to see a man's face behind the face of the deceased in her dreams. She even began to summon the woman's spirit. Through Remy, Teresita told the whole story.
Teresita's ghost claims she was killed by Alan Shourie
The killer and the detective who investigated the case
A hospital orderly named Alan Shourie came to the victim's apartment in February to help her fix her television. At some point, he attacked her, killed her, stole some jewelry and set the mattress on fire. Chua was even able to describe what happened to the jewelry that Shourie gave to his mistress. It was this information that the Chuas gave to the police.
Confession of Shourie
The police, as expected, did not particularly believe in the veracity of the information. But during a conversation with Shourie, they saw the man’s cohabitant wearing jewelry that belonged to the deceased. The information was confirmed not only by the ghost, but also by the cousin of the murdered Teresita, who identified the jewelry.
Of course, this was not enough to convict the man. But his confession when the evidence was laid out in front of him was enough to earn him 14 years in prison for murder.
What actually caused the confession - the arrival of a ghost thirsty for retribution, or the excessive impressionability of the criminal who became too sentimental and gave in to the irrefutable evidence? Of course, Chua could have overheard Shourie talking about the murder and put on a show, or even actually acted on a whim. There are other alternatives to explain the supernatural. However, it is impossible to rule it out completely, and it is certainly an interesting case that does not have clear answers.
