23-year-old Ganesh Baraya from India proved that nothing is impossible. Despite restrictions and discrimination due to his height, he managed to become the shortest doctor in the world.

Ganesh Barayya was born in the Indian state of Gujarat, and went through hardships from a very young age. When Ganesh was four years old, his parents noticed that his head was unnaturally larger than his body and he was not growing. Doctors insisted that the boy had an incurable disorder, but they could not do anything about his dwarfism. At school he was often made fun of for his big head and short stature - but he also had friends who did not let him offend and supported him.

One day, Ganesh's father, Vittal Bhai, who worked as a farmer, was offered 100,000 rupees for his son to perform in a circus. His father, naturally, refused, and even began to worry about his son’s safety, fearing that he might be kidnapped. He began to accompany him to school, and did not allow the boy to go anywhere unattended. Despite his physical limitations, Ganesh was always full of enthusiasm. Also, he always dreamed of becoming a doctor.

As an adult, Ganesh applied for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) but was rejected due to his dwarfism. The Medical Council of India rejected his application due to his height (91cm), saying he would not be able to perform duties in an emergency. But Ganesh was not going to give up his dream. He approached the district authorities, the state education minister, and even the Gujarat court. When his case reached the Supreme Court of India, justice was finally served.

In 2018, the Supreme of India recognized Ganesh's right to enroll in MBBS, which he did the following year. He recently completed his training and is now working as an intern at a hospital in Bhavnagar. In addition, Ganesh is officially considered the shortest doctor in the world.

"I am happy that I got justice from the Supreme Court. Now I am on the way to fulfilling my childhood dream. I know that I am not like everyone else, but I want to live a good life to make my parents proud of me," Ganesh said.

Ganesh still faces discrimination from time to time: for example, many patients do not want to come to see him because of his height. However, once they realize how much he knows and loves what he does, they often change their minds.

“When patients see me, they are a little surprised at first. But then they accept me, and I also accept their initial reaction. They treat me warmly and positively,” says the doctor.
