The owner of the house discovered a 130-year-old “time capsule” hidden under the floorboards (5 photos)

The 26-year-old resident of Swindon (Wiltshire, UK) bought an old Victorian house four years ago. Once she advertised the sale of a table and a woman came to buy it, who said that this house belonged to her family from the end of the 19th century until 2007. She also talked about how there was a “time capsule” hidden in the house.





The new owner of the house, Madeline Goodwin, became interested in this story - and indeed found a metal box under the floorboards with “treasures” - various objects from the past. There were 1901 pennies, a pack of cigarettes, a hat, a Bible, a letter and a few other things.

The “mysterious stranger” said her family had lived in the house since the 1890s, and over the course of a century, various people had added to the “time capsule” hidden in a hidden compartment under the floor. She also contributed by putting in a DVD and a newspaper when they sold the house in 2007.

Madeline liked the time capsule idea so much that she now plans to add one to it, too. And make it so that it could be discovered by future home owners.



“We really enjoyed finding the cache and enjoyed looking at old things. It was great and interesting. Unfortunately, bad weather reached the box, so the letter from the lady's family was illegible, Madeline says. “There’s also a DVD there, but we don’t have anything to play it on yet!” We’ll have to find an opportunity and see what’s written on it.”

Madeline plans to add to the time capsule for the home's future owners.



Madeline is already thinking about what she can add to the time capsule:

“We have already started to think about what we can add. We still have all the original Victorian doors and they each have their own door handle, so we are thinking of adding one of these to the capsule. We could also leave a USB stick with pictures and maybe songs. I don't know exactly when we will move, but we plan to stay here for a while. We will store the capsule. But you will have to put things into a new, sealed box to preserve them as best as possible.”
