Gang of women in pink saris keep men at bay in India (7 photos)
In India, there is an association of women called the Gulabi Gang, which protects women in criminal areas, fights for their truth, and generally does everything that conservative men don’t particularly like. But what can they do, because women have sticks!
They also have a uniform - pink saris. If you see a gang of women in a pink saree in the distance, be prepared, now... someone's rights will be protected.
How many members are in this gang
The gang is usually a lower caste, because the police protect the upper caste
270,000 thousand because it is a large organization with women all over the country joining. But at the same time, its members work not only in official ways, but fight for the right cause using the most violent means.
In addition to the pink sari, they even have palki lathi as their uniform. These are long bamboo sticks, sometimes with caps on the ends for strength.
They train to fight and defend themselves, all in an adult way
Who can be beaten? March along the street where girls have been frequently harassed lately. It is indicative to go into a public toilet, where, again, women are often harassed.
Most often, they go to protests and marches when blatant crimes against women occur. For example, rape, which often happens in the provinces, but the police are in no hurry to look for the criminals.
Pink was not chosen by chance, it is the color of life in India
The statistics may shock you, but TWO-THIRDS of women still experience domestic violence in India.
The leader of the Pink Saree Gang, also a woman, 50-year-old Sampat Pal Devi, founded the movement simply as a gathering of women neighbors to protect girls in their settlement. But gradually it spread across the country like a fire.
Pal Devi herself fully tasted the hard life of women in India. She is from a lower caste, so she was not given an education, and at the age of 12 she was married to an adult man - an ice cream seller. And he beat her throughout the marriage, but what could a child girl do?
The men pressed against the wall and watched in silence
As she grew older, wiser, she decided that no one should experience the same things she did. But somehow she expressed a sad thought that she used to try to talk and admonish men, shame them. But they knew no shame, but the stick worked.
Is this hooliganism?
Definitely yes. Because charges have already been brought against the gang for attacking officials and causing unrest. But they are not offended; the locals do not hand over the girls to the authorities, because if the gang is removed from the street, there will be no one to be responsible for order.
Can one woman defeat a man? No. And so they help each other together
After all, the gang in the pink sari appeared precisely because you couldn’t get protection and order from the authorities.
It's funny that in India women's rights are defended by a gang of hooligans. But this is an excellent example of self-organization, as well as the readiness of society to change and move away from barbaric traditions as quickly as possible.
This is the head of a huge gang, but at the same time, you can’t call her a criminal
