Cher filed all the necessary paperwork to become Elijah Blue Allman's guardian. According to the 77-year-old artist, her son is unable to make reasonable financial decisions due to serious drug problems.
The singer is "concerned that any funds given to Elijah will be immediately spent on drugs, leaving his son with no assets to support himself and his life at risk," according to documents filed Wednesday (Dec. 27). ) in Los Angeles Superior Court.
It also said Elijah is entitled to regular payments from a trust set up by his late father, rock musician Gregg Allman. However, Sher fears that the funds will be spent on illegal substances rather than on basic necessities.
Cher decided to take custody of her son
"Given Elijah's mental and physical health challenges, as detailed in the confidential document filed, he is unable to express a preference for the appointment of a guardian for his estate. Elijah's mother loves him immensely and has always acted in his best interests," the statement said.
According to the star, Elijah is “virtually incapable of managing his financial resources”
Allman's battle with addiction began when he was just 11 years old.
"I started doing drugs around the same time as everyone else, at eleven. I mean, I just did what everyone else did," he told ET in 2014, adding that he started out with weed and ecstasy, and then moved on to heavier substances.
The 77-year-old Moonstruck star says she is best suited to play the guardian and that Elijah's two siblings nominated her for the role.
She also noted that Elijah's wife, Mariangela King, prevents him from getting the mental health and drug treatment he needs.
The complaint comes months after Cher allegedly kidnapped her son from a New York hotel room.
King accused her mother-in-law of hiring four people to kidnap Elijah.
The incident occurred on November 30, 2022, unknown persons picked up Allman and took him to a rehabilitation center.
“At this time, I do not know anything about the well-being and whereabouts of my husband,” Mariangela said.
The artist denies the accusations: “Motherhood is for life. You go to any lengths to save your children. But I didn’t do that. And if I did, I wouldn’t say it.”
Cher previously admitted in an interview with People: "I have the same problems as millions of people in the United States. I'm a mother. It's my job to try to help my children one way or another. You do everything for your children. When you can help them, "You just do it because that's what motherhood is. But it's joy, even when there's pain in your soul. You think about the children and smile, love them and try to be close to them."
The court set a hearing date for March 6, 2024.
