On December 18, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred in northwest China. The disaster killed at least 148 people. 30 hours after powerful tremors, rescuers found a living dog under a pile of concrete.
A resident of Minhe Hui Tu Autonomous County heard barking from the rubble of his destroyed home and immediately contacted rescuers. The arriving service entered under the concrete slab and pulled out the dehydrated animal.
Rescuers used shovels and iron rods to dig a narrow passage. After several hours of persistent efforts, they were able to rescue the golden retriever. The dog was immediately taken to the veterinarian.
The pictures published on the Chinese social network Douyin excited users.
"Rescue Warriors, you did the hard work. You are the best people and true heroes. I thank you! It's amazing that the dog is so strong. Give her good care," one wrote.
Another added: "This is the greatest kindness people can show to animals!"
About 1,000 people were reportedly injured and more than 14,000 homes were destroyed in the earthquake.
On Friday evening in Meipo, a village in Gansu, the first 500 temporary homes opened their doors to victims. Funerals took place that same day, some of which followed Muslim traditions common to much of the population in the affected area.
Most often, tremors occur in western China, including the provinces of Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan and Yunnan, as well as in the Xinjiang region and Tibet. The latest earthquake was the country's deadliest in nine years.
