The expedition “from pole to pole” on the Nissan Ariya electric car has ended (5 photos)
It took almost 10 months for the electric car to cover 30,000 km across the Americas and Antarctica. It couldn't be done without gasoline. The intercontinental run of the electric Nissan Ariya on 39-inch tires, which started in the spring, successfully ended at the South Pole on December 15, although travelers were able to report on this only on Monday, when communication with the world was restored.
Arctic Trucks, which specializes in fine-tuning SUVs, helped the Ramsey couple prepare the serial Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE crossover for testing. The same company provided the expedition with additional equipment and backup in the form of a pair of powerful Toyota pickup trucks with internal combustion engines on the final leg of the journey.
The most favorable was a trip to North America, where there was a developed network of charging stations. Solar panels and a retractable wind generator with a capacity of 5 kW contributed to moving around South America. Already in Antarctica, in order not to discharge the traction battery at night from gusts of icy wind, in parking lots the Nissan Ariya had to be covered either with a special tent or fenced with a snow barrier. Not without the help of a gasoline generator, which is mandatory for traveling in the Arctic regions.
In addition to extremely low temperatures, the expedition vehicles had to deal with the problem of thin air, since the South Pole is located at an altitude of 2835 m above sea level, which made it difficult to start the engines of diesel SUVs.
With some reservations, we can say that thanks to the determination of the organizers of the race, electric cars have proven their viability and the possibility of operation in regions poorly prepared for this. But you can’t assign a support team from Arctic Trucks to every client. Although traveling to such distances alone is definitely not the best idea.
