14 dystopian images of Varosha, the largest ghost town on the planet (15 photos)
A city that could become an excellent location for TV series and films about the post-apocalypse.
In 1974, residents left it in a hurry amid the roar of airplanes and periodic shelling, and since then the city has been abandoned. Tourists have recently opened up access to this area, but there are still very few of them. Of course, photographer Dimitri Bourriau, who is in love with abandoned places in Europe and beyond, could not help but take advantage of this. He captured impressive images of nature triumphing over human infrastructure.
Varosha was originally a resort area of the city of Famagusta
It was one of the most fashionable resorts in Europe on the Mediterranean Sea
In the 1970s, the population of Famagusta was 42 thousand people, and more than half were Greeks
When fighting began in the city, 25 thousand Greeks left the city in a hurry
At that time, there were more than a hundred hotels operating in Varosha
As a result, the huge area was left empty, and it remains empty to this day.
In 2020 it was opened to tourists, but their flow is still not large
Bourriaud was actually alone: he rode around the city on a bicycle
True, he was watched by police in civilian uniform, since Varosha is under guard
Despite the abandonment, there are video cameras installed everywhere, so the city is being watched
The photographer admitted that he felt a little tension, but it did not interfere with his work
He focused on the city frozen in time
And also in nature, which is slowly reclaiming its territories
And for half a century nature has coped with this perfectly.
