Interesting facts about the film "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" (23 photos)
The film "Pirates of the Caribbean" was released in 2003 and became a real hit. The film with the charismatic Captain Jack Sparrow raised the pirate theme from its knees and again made it popular with viewers.
1. The film "Pirates of the Caribbean" was the first film that was based on an attraction at Disneyland, and not vice versa. Except that after the success of the film, Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa were added to the attraction.
Moreover, this is the last attraction that Walt Disney himself had a hand in creating. But, unfortunately, the genius did not live to see its discovery. The attraction itself was opened only 3 months after Disney's death.
2. Initially, the authors planned to call the film simply “Pirates of the Caribbean,” but a little later it was decided to add “The Curse of the Black Pearl,” since the creators immediately envisioned filming a sequel in the future.
3. Johnny Depp's body was almost completely covered with tattoos, so it was decided to put as many pieces of clothing on Jack Sparrow as possible in order to hide the actor's body designs.
But the sparrow tattoo on Jack's arm was not real. But later Johnny Depp made himself an exact copy of this very tattoo and wrote “Jack”. But the inscription was made not in honor of his hero, but in honor of his son Jack. Unless the bird is pointing in the other direction.
4. Johnny Depp created his image (gait and antics), inspired by the similar behavior of The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
And of course, it’s worth noting that Keith Richards appeared in the third part of the film as Jack Sparrow’s father. It's funny.
5. This film became the first Disney film to receive a teen rating of PG-13 (for viewers over 13 years old).
6. Director Gore Verbinski said in an interview that he chose Orlando Bloom for the role of Will Turner, among other things, because he starred in the film “The Lord of the Rings.” It was important for him to give his answer to the Warner Brothers studio. Meanwhile, he had a choice between Bloom and Heath Ledger.
By the way, about "The Lord of the Rings". 8 out of 9 actors who played the heroes of the Fellowship of the Ring got elven tattoos (only John Rhys Davis, who played Gimli, refused this idea). The creators deliberately tried to hide this tattoo on the wrist of Orlando Bloom (as you remember, he played Legolas in The Lord of the Rings), but in some scenes you can still see it in passing, if, of course, you look closely.
7. Jessica Alba was considered for the role of Elizabeth Swan, but in the end the role went to 17-year-old actress Keira Knightley.
8. Johnny Depp wanted to personally work on the image of his character and sometimes proposed crazy ideas, for example, the absence of a nose (according to his idea, Jack was supposed to become a victim of syphilis). But the creators refused to implement this.
Also, the creators rejected his idea to make Jack Sparrow's teeth gold, but Johnny quietly inserted several gold dental implants into himself. Seeing this, Gore Verbinski waved his hand and allowed the presence of several gold teeth in the protagonist’s mouth. By the way, the dentist was even given special thanks in the credits for this.
And by the way, Johnny Depp himself still wore these gold implants until the filming of the final third part ended, which (as it turned out) was not the final one at all.
But still, Depp often improvised on camera. Even the iconic phrase “Do you dare?” was an improvisation by an actor. Johnny Depp himself came up with the name Hector for Barbossa.
But if it weren’t for Depp’s improvisation and his work on the image, Jack Sparrow would not have turned out to be such a funny and charismatic character, because according to the script, Jack should have been more serious and restrained.
9. Keira Knightley thought that she would not be able to pull off the main role in such a large Disney project, so she decided to take a minimum of things with her, believing that she would be kicked out of the filming and she would go home. But nothing. It seemed to hold up well, and even popped into the fifth part as a cameo.
10. The Disney studio wanted to film films in the same pool where the cult films Titanic by James Cameron and Pearl Harbor by Michael Bay were filmed. But they were a little late, as he was already busy. At that moment, the film “Master of the Seas” was being filmed there. As a result, it was decided to shoot the film on real islands of the Caribbean.
11. After the end of filming, almost every member of the film crew took a cursed coin as a souvenir. It seems like everything worked out fine).
12. Initially, the creators planned to cast Australian actor Hugh Jackman for the role of Jack Sparrow, but he was unable to take part. Then the creators tried to attract Matthew McConaughey, Robert De Niro and even Jim Carrey. But none of them, for one reason or another, could take part in the film (or did not want to).
13. The film "Pirates of the Caribbean" was a very risky project, since pirate films were not particularly appreciated by the audience, and the primary source was only a little-known attraction, and not a book or a previously famous film. Moreover, the producers believed that Johnny Depp would simply sink this film with his antics and, as a result, the film would fail at the box office.
But what's the end result? And in the end, with a budget of $180 million (140 - production, 40 - marketing), the film grossed $654 million worldwide, and Johnny Depp was even nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actor category. But he did not become a laureate.
14. Remember the funny scene where Barbossa’s monkey smiled touchingly? But this was not according to the script and no effects were used here. The monkey actually smiled himself, completely unplanned. The creators simply could not help but insert this particular scene into the final version.
15. Since Keira Knightley's hair was quite short for the role of Elizabeth, she had to wear a wig.
16. To prevent Jack’s face from looking blurry in the frame, during the filming of the first scene, his eyes were specially made with eyeliner. But in the end, the creators liked it so much that they decided to make the eyeliner one of Jack’s tricks.
17. Actor Geoffrey Rush, who played Hector Barbossa, considered Keira Knightley incredibly beautiful and spectacular, so he believed that the audience would not pay attention to him, and their gaze would be aimed only at the beauty Knightley.
That is why he always tried to stay to the left of the actress, since he believed that the audience would look from left to right, and then they would definitely not miss him.
