Crowds of tourists trampled the sacred rock of the Inca city in Peru (3 photos)

The Department of Culture of the Peruvian province of Cusco was forced to take extreme measures, limiting access for tourists to the Temple of the Condor and the Intihuatan Observatory of the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu due to the deterioration of the stone path. Thousands of thousands of tourists coming to Peru shuffled their boots so intensely that almost nothing remained of the attraction.





It's all due to heavy traffic. There are so many tourist groups wanting to visit the ancient Inca city that the stone elements of the trail in some sectors have been badly damaged.

The Machu Picchu Management Committee plans to consider the permanent closure of some areas of the Inca citadel.



Machu Picchu, especially after being included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, has become a center of mass tourism. In 2011, a decision was already made to limit the number of visitors.

According to the rules introduced, only 2,500 tourists per day can visit this wonder of the world, of which no more than 400 people can climb Mount Huayna Picchu, part of the archaeological complex.

Now, in order to preserve the ancient monument, UNESCO demands that the number of tourists per day be reduced to 800. However, after the wear and tear of the trail, the Peruvian authorities have not ruled out the possibility that some parts of the Inca citadel will be completely closed to visitors.



Temple of the Condor - a rock formation shaped like a bird with outstretched wings, which was supposedly used for sacrifices. Intihuatana is considered an astronomical observatory for measuring time, seasons and planting dates. These sites are among the main tourist attractions of the Inca City.
