Yes, you've probably seen something similar in the movies more than once and found in the literature. The same door in Mount Eribor, on the keyhole which a ray of light should show on Durin's Day... In general, both the plan and the implementation is quite clear. The same idea was once implemented in the park Anthem Community in Arizona. A monument of five was erected there marble “megaliths” in a row, in which “windows” are cut out at different heights.

At a certain moment, light must pass exactly through all these holes and get on the image of the "Great Seal" emblem, laid out from a mosaic on the ground. And the marble slabs symbolize the 5 branches of the US military - Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.
As you guessed, the entire composition is dedicated to the military - it was installed in honor of veterans of the First World War, but now the memorable date concerns veterans of all military actions that fought and led by the USA.
