Giethoorn village: they have no roads (5 photos)

There is one village in Europe where people cannot use transport, because there are simply no roads in it. But it's them doesn't interfere at all.





The village of Giethoorn is located in the Netherlands. Instead of roads in it lots of canals so locals move around there exclusively on boats. Each house has its own pier, where the personal boats of the Giethoorns are parked.

The boat can be rented for tourism, they are used as personal and public transport. There are even peculiar canal buses. And, of course, there are bridges in the village to move from one side of the channel to the other.



Giethoorn always attracts many tourists, because everyone interesting to see how the villagers build their way of life and business without any land infrastructure.

They have an ambulance and fire departments that work according to a system invented specifically for this village. Channels equipped beacons to help aid services navigate.





Along the waterway, food is delivered and any goods in general. That is, every villager can get delivery of everything you want right to your doorstep.

For this, Giethoorn has special "food boats".

Villagers can order goods from cities that located nearby. And, of course, in the village itself there are also their restaurants and shops, which can also bring everything directly to threshold. Well, no one canceled their own mini-gardens in the areas, where it is also not forbidden to grow vegetables and fruits. And several times a year food fairs are held where farmers bring their products. IN these days Giethoorn is quite crowded - not only locals come residents, but also tourists.



But Giethoorn is interesting not only for its special infrastructure. IN The village still has many beautiful and unusual traditions. For example, on King's Day, which is celebrated annually at the end of April, there are always music and street food festivals, parades and mass entertainment events.

And tourists can enjoy local cuisine and traditional dishes, goat cheeses, fish in a variety of types and more.



And of course boat races! It would be strange if in village, where all transport links are only by water, no one thought organize such a competition. Not allowed to participate in the competition only local residents, but also guests of the village. This tradition among the Giethoorns one of my favorites.
