Musical pillars of Indian temples

20 May 2023

Since ancient times, Indian craftsmen have been familiar with the art of working stone, which rings loudly when struck. Columns, statues of gods, sacrificial stones, stairs made of "singing stone" can be seen in almost all the southern states of India.

In the skillful hands of masons, after painstaking processing, the stone acquired resonant properties. Some of the columns began to “hum” at low octaves, others made sounds pure and gentle, which gradually died away somewhere in the stone.
