Following in the forefront of tolerance, the largest American HarperCollins has replaced "offensive" words or completely deleted some passages in the works about Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, writes The Telegraph.

Thus, in the novel "Death on the Nile" from the speech of Mrs. Allerton, who complains about being molested by a group of children had this passage removed: “Their eyes are just disgusting, and their noses too, and I don’t believe that I really love children."

And in the collection "Recent Cases and Two Other Stories of Miss Marple" the judge gets angry, demanding breakfast. It has been omitted from the text that is due to "his Indian character".

An excerpt was cut out in The Caribbean Secret in which the hero does not see a black woman in the bushes at night.

The expressions “black marble body”, “Indian temperament”, “natives”, and “Jew” were also removed by the editors. Removed everything epithets that described the ethnicity of the characters: "Nubian boatman" became just a boatman, a woman "Gypsy appearance” became young.

HarperCollins is one of the largest English-language publishers, publishing books all over the world. It is one of the "big five" publishing houses, and its turnover for 2016 amounted to $1.646 billion. this isn't the first time the company has edited mid-20th-century authors. Previously edited by author Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate factory" - in his story, the Oompa-Loompas received gender-neutral descriptions and turned from little men into little people.

According to Western media, editing in these cases HarperCollins engages so-called "sensitive readers". This bloggers, writers and editors whose (paid) job is search potentially offensive clichés and stereotypes about which the author of the text could not suspect. At the same time, the “sensitive reader” does not have power of the censor, he can only give advice to the editor, who listen to him or not.
