An ancient building with a mysterious purpose was found in Italy (2 photos + 1 video)
A mysterious structure of unknown purpose was discovered in Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. The discovery was made during excavations for laying fiber in the town of Torreano, near Udine.
The ancient structure, discovered by the builders, is made of heavy stone slabs forming a rectangle - two long walls and a short wall topped with a semblance of a roof. At first, archaeologists thought that this is a sarcophagus, but during the excavation of the structure no traces were found human remains. Instead, they found inside the stone structure thick silty soil, typical of near-water places.
The discovery was first reported by the historian and archaeologist Ivano Dorbolo. In his opinion, the most plausible hypothesis is that it was a dam built so that carts could pass through an ancient watercourse that flowed through the structure. Another version says that it was a culvert or drainpipe, but roughly hewn heavy stone slabs are not the best choice for such a structure. Considering the weight and size of the stones, it is likely that this was not a structure built hastily by a local farmer, and a large-scale an infrastructure project that required a lot of investment and labor.
Archaeologists failed to collect finds at the site stratigraphic data. Meanwhile, according to experts, almost it is impossible to date the collection of heavy stone slabs in the absence of related artifacts or remains suitable for radiocarbon dating or dendrochronological analysis. Therefore, archaeologists admit that they do not can say with accuracy what kind of building it is, and how old it is. However, they are determined to continue research. Currently the building was closed from idle prying eyes to ensure it protection.
