"Outcast": the history of the film and the secrets of its filming (12 photos)
I want to tell you the story behind the making of this film, interesting facts and secrets of his filming. After all, it's all in the aggregate helped the creators to make such a great movie for us.
Cast Away drama starring Tom Hanks came out in 2000 year, and it quickly became a real cult. Film shows simple, at first glance, the story of a man who turned out to be completely alone on a deserted island where he tries to survive and find salvation.
Idea and script writing
The idea for this film came to mind in the mid-1990s. actor Tom Hanks, who wanted to create a touching drama about modern Robinson Crusoe. He later shared this idea with the screenwriter and his good friend William Broyles.
Broyles is famous for his work on films such as "Apollo 13" (1995) and "Trap" (1999). Hanks asked him to write a script and for this Broyles decided to spend alone 2 weeks on a desert island.
The screenwriter decided to put himself in the place of the hero, to see the world through the eyes of a man who was far from civilization, so he he built a fire, collected coconuts and ate fish caught with his own hands. William even accidentally found a volleyball on the shore of the island, which will subsequently determine one of the main storylines in the future film.

Broyles also did various experiments on the island, which will later be included in the script: for example, he from his own experience convinced that a strong rope can be created from the film of video cassettes. Such "Working" self-isolation was a great inspiration for William. Behind in a short time he came up with an almost realistic scenario, made the film so popular.
When the rights to stage the film were acquired by the studios "20 Century Fox" and "Dreamworks Pictures", their bosses decided to appoint directed by Robert Zemeckis, which was incredibly happy Tom Hanks. They already worked together on the famous film "Forrest Gump" (1994), so their new union delighted many people.
Michelle Pfeiffer was offered the role of the protagonist's lover (she simply refused) and Sharon Stone. The actress did not like that, according to in her opinion, there are only two main roles in the film - this is Chuck Noland and volleyball. Then the Oscar winner was offered to play the heroine. Helen Hunt, and she agreed.
From Moscow to Fiji
Rogue One's budget was about $90 million - that's a huge amount, and at first it seems that it was unreasonable. But it's not. Filming began in January 1999 and ended in May 2000. and between them there was a break for 1 year, which will be discussed below.
The overseas office of FedEx was planned to be filmed in Poland or Hungary. They just took place at the beginning of the filming process - in January 1999. And Tom Hanks remembered that time for a long time, because later he admitted that Moscow for him was the coldest city of all, where he happened to be.
It is curious that during the filming in the warehouse among the extras you can see the actor Dmitry Dyuzhev. Also in this crowd was Anna Frolovtseva, who played the role of Galina Ivanovna in the famous series "Voronins" (2009-2019).
As for "FedEx", according to the producers and Zemeckis, absolutely no money was received from the company. It turns out that the film advertised this corporation for free. Wherein "FedEx" also provided its car, plane and opportunity for free shoot for the film crew in their office.
By the way, the founder and owner of "FedEx" Frederick Smith played himself in the film.
Let's move on to the whole basis of the film - a desert island. "Outcast" was filmed in Fiji, more specifically on the island of Monuriki in the Pacific Ocean. The creators really liked the special flavor of this island, although shooting in Hawaii would have been cheaper. It's worth saying that since the premiere of "Rogue One", this deserted island has been visited every year by tourists and film fans.
But the filming itself was not easy. They passed under strict supervision of environmental scientists who make sure that no one harms nature of the island. Therefore, when the group dug out one tree that interfered shooting, then after their okendings in its place were planted immediately 3 of the same tree.
Shooting test and a break for a year
The plane crash scene was filmed in the studio pavilion as usually happens, and then at the post-production stage were added some special effects. Interestingly, the catastrophe itself is shown from the inside. aircraft - so Zemeckis wanted to enhance the intimidating effect of this moment.
Also in the pavilion was made a special pool of huge sizes, in which many "marine" scenes were filmed. Sometimes Tom Hanks refused an understudy, because of which he swallowed plenty of water in it. But how many wonderful episodes were filmed with him.
The working group encountered great difficulty during filming on the island. Initially, the script had many scenes, where it rained. But there was no real rain, so it was decided to deliver special rain installations to the island. But it turned out extremely expensive, and as a result, the creators decided to simply remove the rain in many scenes in the script.
There was another problem with the film crew. Due to the strong the noise of the water and the surfer teams present nearby (their cries were audible) during filming on the island, the live recording was rejected. Therefore, the entire sound sequence for the scenes filmed on the island was superimposed in studios.
Robert Zemeckis especially wanted to achieve the effect of complete silence. Because of what in the scenes on the island (the hero of Tom Hanks spends on 103 minutes of screen action) no music was used to to increase the despair and complete isolation of the protagonist from the modern world. Composer Alan Silvestri wrote only 15 minutes of the film score (including the composition for the final credits).
It was also interesting that almost all the night scenes in the film filmed during the daytime. The darkness itself and the starry sky have already been added during post-production.
Tom Hanks also had time to suffer. He hurt so bad foot that all filming was interrupted so that the actor visited the doctor. It turned out, that his wound had become infected, and if he had delayed visiting doctor, you would get blood poisoning. The wound could not be wetted, so Filming stopped for 2 weeks.
In general, for the sake of the film, Tom Hanks had to first dial 23 kg of weight, and already in the midst of filming, lose about 20 kg and grow a thick hair. Because of this, the production of "Rogue One" was taken a big break. for 1 year. During this time, almost the entire film crew of Robert Zemeckis managed to shoot the thriller "What lies behind" (2000) with Michelle Pfeiffer in main role.
Tom Hanks would later say weight loss was for him the hardest test, because he loves to eat delicious food (especially potatoes fries). But in the film we will see a naturally emaciated actor with real hair and beard.
Hanks also often improvised on camera. For example the scene with the coconut when he threw it, and the one where the ball bounced off the rock. At first, Robert Zemeckis thought this scene was stupid, but during editing, he decided to include it in the film. The director thought that a desperate man can do ridiculous things to achieve a result, and therefore inserted the episode with the coconut into the picture.
It is impossible not to discuss one of the main characters of the film - Wilson. Originally wanted to use an American football ball, but Zemeckis did not like the idea. Then we decided to take volleyball Wilson ball. And after a while he became, without a doubt, the most famous volleyball in popular culture.
By the way, 1 out of 3 volleyballs used during filming, was sold at auction for a large 18.4 thousand dollars.
The latest difficulties for the filmmakers happened with a raft, on which the hero left the island. Several people from the film crew made it in 5 days, but at the first attempt to launch the raft into the water - he collapsed. Then the locals closest to the island came to the rescue. residents who made such a raft that Zemeckis arranged.
The strongest moment in the film - the episode of Chuck Noland's breakup with Wilson was filmed for 4 whole days.
Film recognition and fame
After grueling editing and post-production, "Outcast" in was eventually released on December 7, 2000. The picture earned almost 430 million dollars and became a big hit at the American box office. Critics and the audience took in ceating the film positively, especially praising the magnificent performance by Tom Hanks, and excellent direction by Robert Zemeckis.
The film received 2 Oscar nominations for Best Actor role "and" Best Sound ", but lost both. As well as at other film awards. But in the only nomination at the Golden Globe, the tape won - this time Tom Hanks did not lose his prize in the acting nomination nobody.
But the awards were not very important, because Zemeckis, Hanks and all the rest of the crew gave us a wonderful film, which few people will remain indifferent.
Finishing this text, it is important to remember the question that worried many viewers for a long time -
"What was in the unopened package?"
. Robert Zemeckis once replied that there was a waterproof mobile phone powered by solar panels. It should be noted that the director has a complete sense of humor.
