Amateur seekers, accustomed to digging for cartridges and thimbles rather than gold, were amazed to find coin after coin from a hidden ancient hoard. In four days they unearthed 627 coins, including 12 ultra-rare full gold coins from the Black Death era.
The hoard was excavated by Andrew Winter, Dom Rapley, Eric Wierutsky, Jaroslav Gedina, Dariusz Fialkowski and the brothers Tobias and Mateusz Nowak.
During the excavations, the men took turns sleeping in a tent near the pit, so that random passers-by would not take the booty.
At Beaconsfield Coroner's Court, Senior Coroner Crispin Butler after reading the report of Dr. Barry Cook, curator of the British Museum, stated that the treasure meets the criteria for treasures of the state scale. Butler described 12 gold coins made between 1346 and 1351. year, as extremely rare as there are only 12 known copies of these coins. They were discovered in 1963. Rest coins found in the hoard - 547 silver pennies from the reign Edward I and II, 21 Irish pennies, 20 continental coins and 27 Scottish pennies from the reign of Alexander III, John Balliol and Robert the Bruce - more common.
Now the museum will have to agree on a settlement of the issue of compensation with seekers and landowners, none of whom attended the hearings.
Speaking about the find, Mateusz Nowak, a hospital cleaner from Newcastle, still can't speak calmly. "It seemed unreal, - he says. - After we found the treasure, and then cleared territory, we had to extend the search twice, because the coins were all did not end. It was a miracle for all of us."
The face value of the coins would have been a little over £6 per today's money, but estimates of their value reach 150,000 pounds sterling.
Dariusz Fialkowski, mechanic from Bristol and father of three, stumbled upon treasure after finding a thimble and was delighted with your luck. Then he found two silver coins, after which he called comrades. “These two silver coins seem to be specially for me. lying down,” he says. - Before that - except for the thimble - I found only shotgun shells. When I found the coins I screamed like crazy because he was so excited. I was happy. These coins are for me were special. These little pieces of silver are actually - little pieces of history. But then ... then we found all this gold .. I I still can't believe it. I have three small children. After finds I went to rest and recover, but still not yet completely was able to do it. It's incredible.'
The find was made during an organized search event. antiquities, which took place on a field near Humbleden, village, known since 1086. In accordance with the rules of detection and treasure hunt, anything over three coins is considered "treasure", oh which must be declared to the organizers.
After the treasure was found by Winter's team, they announced it, after which the rest left the field, leaving them to work alone. By eyewitness accounts, everyone was "swept with a real fever" when the news of The find spread throughout the festival. Search engines from different countries, who came to the event, stood by the pit and watched how theAstlians take out coin after coin.
