Why did they erect a monument to the horse on the shore of the famous "Lake over the Ocean" (6 photos)
The lake (the deepest and largest in the Faroe Islands, by the way) is extended to the center of the island of Voar (stretches as much as 6 kilometers, by the way) and its on the shore farthest from the ocean is an unusual monument. There is nothing special is a sculpture depicting a horse jumping out of the water. However, this horse is not really a horse, it is Nyx from the ancient Faroese legends!
I must say that there are a couple of settlements on this side of the lake. - the small village of Vatnsoyrar, which appeared only in 1921, and the larger and older settlement of Sørvagur, in whose honor the lake and got its name.

In theory, the actions that take place in the legend of Nyx, happen to the ancient inhabitants of these places, as the action takes place on Lake Sørvogsvatn.
But the uncomplicated monument itself was created by a sculptor named Paul Skardenny, who just lives in the village of Vatnsoyrar, who installed his creation in November 2017.
Nyx, the village of Vatnsoyrar and the famous shore "over the ocean" on the map
Apparently, the tale itself is not very well known outside Faroe Islands, but it is considered quite old. Let's start with the fact that Nix or Nykurin, as it is also called here, this is not a horse, this is some kind of magical creature (in general, they are in local there are several legends).
This creature most often appears in the eyes of people in the form beautiful horse, and Nyx's charms make people want to want to ride on horseback.
But the problem is that it is worth touching this creature - then it is no longer possible to unhook from it, and it drags its rider deep into the lake.
One day, children were playing by the shore of the lake, among whom there were two brother, older Niclass and younger Ganus, who was only 2-3 years old. The children saw a beautiful horse that peacefully drinks water, and they really wanted to stroke her. The horse turned out to be very peaceful and the children climbed up to her. back.
But the problem is that it is worth touching this creature - then it is already impossible to unhook from it, and it drags its rider deep into the lake.

Nyx was a cunning creature, so he calmly waited for several children sit comfortably, and then he broke and galloped to the center lakes. Only little Ganus, being not very agile in effect age, did not have time to mount a horse, and with fright began to shout after his brother: "Brother Nyclass, wait for me!"
The happy ending to this story is that the child and he didn’t speak very well, so he managed to say “Brother Nix" instead of "Nyclass".
It turned out that this magical creature has one weak point - it is worth saying aloud his name, as his spell dissipates.
As a result, the children jumped off the horse at the very moment that plunged into the depths. Happy salvation made everyone happy, but she herself the story, of course, frightened adults.

And they asked the local wizard (usually they say that this there was a priest, just the priests then had the power to cast out the evil spirits) to do something to get rid of Nyukurin.
One day this priest was walking along the lake and saw a creature in the form beautiful girl combing her hair with a golden comb. Further the story goes that the priest took a stone and threw it into the water - from it a big rock has grown.
And he began to say pleasant words to the creature and somehow chatted it up go into this rock, after which he locked him in it. Since then, no one has been Nix I saw local residents and no one else dragged them away.
So, only in the 21st century, their descendants decided that the ancient creature Nyukurin should reappear on the shore of their lake.
So it stands in the form of a wire frame filled with stones, not far from the coast - they even brought electricity to it and made backlight looks nice.
