Ancient statue of Hercules in human height found in the Roman sewers (2 photos)
A large ancient Roman statue was discovered while cleaning a 100-year-old sewer pipe. 
The find was made in the Scottish Roman Park area, where two Thousands of years ago, the famous Appian Way passed. When the statue is raised from the sewers, the workers were unable to save the leg of the antique figure, however, the top of the artwork was removed in its entirety safety.
The marble statue is a figure of a man in a head wearing a lion-skin and a club in his hand. Historians say that the statue clearly dates back to the Roman imperial period (27 BC to 476 AD). A more precise date has yet to be established. For now archaeologists use toothbrushes to clean the statue of dirt and deposits. 
“The discovery of this statue once again proves how our cultural heritage is huge and how much we still have to discover,” Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano commented on the find.
Archaeologists already have a hunch about who could be portrayed as Hercules (Hercules in the Roman tradition).
“We found a certain similarity between the face of Hercules and Emperor Gaius the Messiah Quintus Trajan Decius,” experts say.
“The face of our Hercules, although affected by time, seems to has common features with the official portraits of Decius. For what it can be Decius Trajan, indicate the morphology of the eyes, nose and lips, as well as shaved chin of the hero,” Italian scientists believe.
